Shiny Object
Posted By Eli Mergel, April 10, 2013, in bike, blog, review, product

Portland Design Works Shiny Object is the best addition to my cycle gear since I bought my first multitool.

I have been fixing my own flats since I was a young kid, my father taught me how to change a flat tire when I was young, my interest in bicycles has spiraled out of control since then, I I’ve currently paired my cycling down to 6 bikes, well one is my fiancée’s. Its a passion of mine much like many things I take it to the extreme, in 2003 I rode a downhill mouton bike across the united states, needless to say I love cycling. I have owned many pumps during the years, some that accompanied me through multiple bicycles, and some just lasted a couple weeks or months.

I recently started looking at the CO2 cartridge inflators and I have to say just about none look as nice, clean and as simple as this pump? nozzle? inflater? Whatever you call it, if your in the market check them out. For $25 bux its hard to go wrong. It works as good as it looks and pretty much is about as simple and stylish as it gets.

What is statamic and why does it matter?

statamic is a flat-file content management system. It’s not a static site generator. statamic renders pages on the fly just like many standard database-backed systems do.

Many web developers hear “flat-file” and think slow, static, and limited - we’ve worked hard to erase those misconceptions. Spend a little time with statamic and you might even completely forget you’re not using a database.

Why use statamic when there are completely good content management systems already?

Developing something on statamic is actually fun. Yes you heard it from me, you can create templates that are actually fun to develop. Ive made wordpress, drupal, joomla, Modx, Concrete, themes, and countless other’s and this is the first time I’m actually having fun. Don’t get me wrong its fun to develop the look with anyone, fun to design with people, and create anything. But when it comes down to making a theme function, its a lot of hammering on keys and head banging usually. Not anymore.

Statamic is so powerful and so simple, it pains me to have to develop for another system anymore. Its changed the way I develop websites, its let me do quick functional drafts with fast frameworks, to get demo’s up for clients in no time flat. It gets out of my way and lets me just create something.

That’s just it, what markdown has done for my writing statamic has done for my developing. Its staggeringly good and amazingly efficient, it has a great community of people supporting and surrounding it, and its just plain a joy to work with.

Why will your clients like it?

Well a full on wordpress implementation is easy enough so why change? To add functionality to wordpress you have to rely on 3rd party plugins, and other people to keep those plugins up to date for not only functionality purposes, but security reasons as well. With statamic, nearly anything you want to add on you can, want a simple photo next to your name and need a place to upload the file, its as easy as editing 2 text documents, (the fields file for your blog post, and the html template where you want to place the photo). Want to add a new field for just about anything? favorite movie of the day? photo of the week? salad of the month? It’s so simple it just makes you want to dance around.

There are about 900 other reasons I use statamic, maybe one day Ill actually write out a comprehensive list of reasons Its better than your cms for about 98% of the projects you work on, but for now Ill keep it short and sweet. The implementation of the overall system and how easy it is to version control led me to use it. The continued support and growing community around it keeps me using it.

I like to create things with fun, open-minded people. Feel free to say hello! I’ll respond as soon as possible.
